14 of our year 9 students have just returned from a 12 day stay with their German partners at the Gesamtschule Hollfeld in Bavaria.
Our students undertook a programme of work in the German school which prepared them for the various trips and activities during their12 days away. Roleplays around the shops of Hollfeld during the first week gave youngsters the confidence to use their German when out and about. The students immersed themselves in the German language and at the same time learnt at first hand what it was like living in a German family and attending a German school. The trips to München, Bayreuth, Bamberg and Nürnberg, as well as into the beautiful Fränkische Schweiz, enabled pupils to experience some extremely significant historical towns as well as some stunning scenery. The group was made extremely welcome by the host families and by the Mayor of Hollfeld who held an official welcome for us at the town hall before inviting all participants out for a meal. We also took part in a ‘Schulfest’ to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Gesamtschule Hollfeld by showpiecing a film about Chiltern Edge made by our students.
This is the 39th year of this fantastic link between the 2 schools: over the years some strong friendships have been forged and many students have returned privately to visit their partners. We are looking forward to the second leg of the Exchange when the Germans visit Sonning Common in July.
